Program Description
The Regenerative Grazing and Livestock Systems Certificate Program develops proficiency and skills with ruminant (beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goat) grazing, as a cornerstone of a modern and profitable agricultural operation. This hybrid certificate program connects students to leaders in the agricultural practices of adaptive multi-paddock grazing. Through this certificate students will develop the specialized skills to put regenerative grazing into practice, including fence and water system design, sound pasture plant management, soil health management, selection criteria for livestock genetics, development of grazing management plans, and the running of a livestock business.
Through coursework and real-world experience, students will learn how regenerative grazing can improve soil function, increase biomass production, and moderate the impacts of floods and droughts to improve profitability. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be equipped to run a grazing farm, obtain work as a farm manager, become a technical service provider, work for state or federal agriculture sectors, land trusts or other regional organizations that aid farmers, such as the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Program Outcomes
- Understand regenerative livestock production systems.
- Understand and design forage and pasture management systems, taking into full account the variables of soil, forage plants, cover crops, rotational density and herd.
- Identify key components of ruminant nutrition, infectious diseases, pests, and herd genetics/breeding, and understand the role of pasture management within the context of herd health.
- Effectively use farm management tools and business knowledge to create a financially sustainable grazing business model.
- Design, construct and maintain fencing and watering systems.
