Dental Hygiene Online Degree Completion (BS.DHO)

Program Description 

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BS.DHO) Degree Completion Program (Plus 2) at Vermont State University is an online program designed for licensed dental hygienists who have earned an associate degree in dental hygiene from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited program and seek to complete a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. No campus visits are required. Students have up to six years to complete program requirements.

The program builds upon foundational clinical education by expanding knowledge in advanced dental hygiene practice, public health, research, leadership, and healthcare management. Delivered in a flexible online format, the program allows practicing dental hygienists to continue working while advancing their education. Coursework emphasizes evidence-based decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration, and leadership development to meet the evolving demands of oral healthcare delivery.

The curriculum includes advanced study in community oral health, healthcare policy, research methodology, dental hygiene education, advanced periodontology, communication strategies, and practice management. Students develop the ability to critically evaluate scientific literature, apply research findings to clinical practice, and contribute to improved oral health outcomes for diverse populations.

Graduates are prepared for expanded career opportunities in public health, dental hygiene education, healthcare administration, corporate dental settings, research, and advanced clinical practice. The program also provides a strong academic foundation for graduate study in dental hygiene, public health, healthcare leadership, and related fields.

The VTSU BS.DHO Degree Completion Program supports the profession’s commitment to lifelong learning and to advancing oral health care through leadership, scholarship, and service.

Academic Progression Requirement: All OHS, CHEM, and BIO courses must be completed with a grade of C (73) or higher to continue in the program.

Program Outcomes 

  1. Integrate evidence-based research to enhance dental hygiene practice and oral health outcomes.
  2. Develop appropriate, ethical, and effective strategies for addressing patient, community, and organizational needs.
  3. Collaborate effectively with patients, oral health professionals, interdisciplinary teams, and community stakeholders in diverse settings.
  4. Design, implement, and evaluate oral health promotion, disease prevention, and patient advocacy educational materials that are culturally responsive and population-focused.
  5. Articulate professional goals focused on expanding your role as a primary oral health care provider in a variety of settings. 

Program Core (112 credits)


If the student is admitted with a degree from a program with whom we have no articulation agreement, their transcript would be evaluated and all of the following requirements must be satisfied.

To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other degree requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
