Dental Hygiene (AS.DHY)

Program Description

Vermont State University’s entry-level Dental Hygiene program is a three-year, six-semester CODA-approved program. Graduates earn an Associate of Science degree and complete all the licensing examinations. Upon successful completion, students are eligible for application for dental hygiene licensure. All dental hygiene professional courses must be taken in the prescribed six-term sequence. The curriculum is time-intensive, and the required courses are rigorous. Complete dedication to coursework is required for successful completion of the program. All OHS, CHE, and BIO courses must be completed with a grade of C (73) or better to continue in the program. Students can continue to the 4th year and complete their BSDH degree asynchronously online.

Program Outcomes

  1. Competently perform the role of a dental hygienist in varied situations and settings.  
  2. Demonstrate the functional acuity and rationale for performing clinical techniques. 
  3. Continually promote the most current concepts of disease control and prevention. 
  4. Emphasize and promote ethical and responsible considerations in patient care.  
  5. Make an essential and unique contribution as an integral member of a healthcare team. 
  6. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of legal responsibilities and ethical considerations of patient care.  
  7. Explore various occupational settings in addition to traditional clinical practice such as public health, education, sales, and research.  
  8. Demonstrate a commitment to continuous and lifelong learning.

Graduation Requirements


To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other Degree Requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
