Health Promotion (BS.HLP)

Program Description 

Vermont State University’s Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion pursue and further their professional skills and knowledge by pursuing either the Concentration in School Health or the Concentration in Community Health.  

Health Promotion specialists assist individuals, communities and schools in promoting positive health behaviors.  They have specialized skills in planning, implementing, and evaluating community/school programs that focus on promoting health literacy, positive health behavior, delaying the onset of unhealthy behaviors, and changing unhealthy behaviors. 

The concentration in Community Health prepares students for careers in non-school health settings such as community health organizations, public health departments, hospitals, work site health promotion, and non-profit community agencies.  This program prepares students to take the Community Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam. 

The concentration in School Health prepares students for Vermont Agency of Education Level I Teacher Licensure in PreK-12 Health Education. VTSU offers the only Health Education Teacher Education (HETE) licensure program in the state of Vermont. Graduates also find employment in other health education venues such as community and public health organizations. 

Program Outcomes 

  1. The ability to organize, develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive community and/or school health promotion program.  

  1. The ability to develop and implement an assessment plan consistent with national and state standards. 

  1. The ability to develop accommodations for health promotion programs to meet the needs of all individuals. This includes an understanding of applicable laws, policies, and procedures.

Graduation Requirements


To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other Degree Requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
