Environmental Science (BS.ENV)


Program Description

Vermont State University’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program integrates the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, and geology to provide students with a strong framework from which to analyze environmental problems and develop effective, sustainable solutions. Students earning a BS in Environmental Science will pursue both laboratory and field careers in government, industry, and the non-profit sector. This program prepares students for careers and graduate degree programs in related environmental fields such as toxicology, hydrology, systems ecology, plant ecology, and water chemistry.

Program Outcomes

  1. Ability to define and explain the boundaries, foundational theoretical constructs, and practices of environmental science.  

  2. Fluency in the use of tools, technologies, and methods in the laboratory and natural environment. 

  3. Ability to construct a summative project or paper that draws on current research, scholarship, and/or techniques in the field of Environmental Science.

  4. Ability to make systematic observations, construct hypotheses, and make predictions, design and experiment, interpret data, and form conclusions based on the data. 

  5. Ability to locate, comprehend, assess, and apply the scholarly work of scientists according to accepted practices. 

  6. Ability to communicate scientific information, both orally and in writing, according to accepted practices in the field of Environmental Science. 

  7. Ability to use appropriate mathematical and statistical methods to evaluate and interpret environmental data. 

  8. Ability to integrate the biological and physical sciences (chemistry and physics) with environmental science. 

  9. A clear understanding of environmental issues and how they impact people and their quality of life.

Secondary Science Concentration (BS.ENV.SED)


13-15 credits. Please note: A double major is required with Inclusive Adolescent Education.

To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other Degree Requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
