Program Description
Vermont State University’s Associate of Science in Human Services is designed for students who both enjoy working with people and making a difference in their lives and communities. The program uniquely blends psychology and human services, preparing graduates to work in a variety of entry-level jobs in the profession. Experiential learning is emphasized, including an 80-hour field placement offered during the second year. Faculty collaborate with individuals to identify suitable placements.
The department partners with numerous human service agencies and schools in the Northeast Kingdom, as well as other regions in Vermont and New Hampshire, offering a wide array of internship opportunities. Experiential learning is reinforced in courses that foster personal growth, professional skill development, and community service. Emphasizing social justice and diversity, the Human Services program integrates these values into most courses.
With a strong foundation in psychological and developmental theory, graduates possess the professional skills to provide vital social services in local communities, and the knowledge and training needed to work with people and make a difference.
This degree prepares students to continue their education to pursue a bachelor’s degree and is also an excellent option for students who would like to combine their interests in psychology and human services with a degree in another program.
