ENG 1055 - Language & Power GE

This course provides an introduction to language politics and first/second language learning and use in society. It examines language evolution and extinction, language acquisition, linguistic diversity in the world today, and how language use reflects cultural and political power dynamics. Students will analyze their own experiences as language users and learners, explore how schools promote monolingualism or multilingualism, and research the linguistic features and sociopolitical status of a modern language or dialect.
