HUM 2160 - The Comic: Humor in Literature, Writing & Film GE

This integrated course is part critical analysis of humor in literature and film and part writing workshop. The art of writing with style-and of perfecting one’s singular voice-for various humorous purposes, including social, political, and persuasive, is taught through exploration of successful comedic literature and film (some television). Students will mix established modes of development (rhetorical strategies) by writing stories, rants, parodies, reviews, and dramatic dialogue using devices such as hyperbole, absurdity, satire, sarcasm, and confession. Culminating projects will include assembling a course portfolio and writing a longer essay that mixes both comedic devices and rhetorical modes.
