Policy Rationale
Vermont State University (VTSU) provides students with a process and guidance for course registration that ensures timely progress toward degree completion, compliance with university and federal policies, and accurate institutional billing and recordkeeping.
Policy
Students must officially register for courses in order to attend classes and be eligible to earn academic credit and utilize financial aid. To be eligible for course registration , students must have received faculty advisor approval and have no registration holds on their account. In cases where a faculty advisor is unavailable, the Student Success Advising center can make such approvals. Registration approval will take place within 5 business days of students presenting their plan for registration.
Non-degree students may register for courses using the Course Registration Form for Non-Degree Students.
Procedures
For assistance contact the Student Success Advising center through the student portal.
Matriculated Undergraduate Students:
- Check for Registration Holds: Ensure eligibility to register for courses by resolving any registration holds, completing necessary program and course prerequisites, and requesting advisor approval. Students will not be able to register for classes if there are any holds.
- Review Academic Requirements: Consult the appropriate academic catalog and personalized program evaluation to identify courses that meet degree requirements and modalities that enable course attendance.
- Consult With Assigned Faculty Advisor: Communicate with the assigned faculty advisor to discuss course selections and academic plan; advisor approval is required before registration. In cases where a faculty advisor is off contract, communicate with the Student Success Advising center. In these cases, advisors will assist with registration, typically within five (5) business days.
- In cases where a student wishes to request approval from an instructor to register for a class without previously having completed the prerequisites, they must receive approval from that instructor via email, to attach that documentation to the Course Add/Drop/Withdrawal/Audit/Override Form.
- Register for Courses: Access the university’s registration system during the assigned registration period to register for planned courses. In cases where online registration is not possible, complete the Course Add/Drop/Withdrawal/Audit/Override Form.
- Confirm Your Registration: On the course plan, confirm registration of intended courses. Make any necessary adjustments before the add/drop deadline.
