Mechanical Engineering Technology (BS)

Program Description

Vermont State University’s Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares students for a career applying technical knowledge and leadership skills to contribute to various industries. Students may choose a concentration in either Manufacturing or Renewable Energy or may choose a general, non-concentration, Mechanical Engineering degree.  These three options share a common core but allow students to either focus their education or pursue a broader field of study. The Manufacturing concentration focuses on advanced manufacturing process and systems design, operations, quality, continuous improvement, and lean manufacturing.  The Renewable Energy concentration focuses on the engineering, design, and modeling of energy systems and processes including heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), solar PV, wind power, bioenergy, and other related technologies. Graduates are prepared to employ strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills and participate productively on professional teams and to develop and continuously improve in a career in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, or a related field.  Graduates pursue careers as engineers, designers, systems technicians, operations technologists, technical managers, and project managers; with opportunities in the engineering, manufacturing, technology, energy, and management sectors.

Students may enroll directly in the B.S. program, or may first complete the Mechanical Engineering Technology A.E. degree and then transfer to the Mechanical Engineering Technology B.S. and complete the bachelors degree with two additional years.

Program Outcomes

  1. Apply knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.  

  2. Design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.  

  3. Apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly defined technical and non-technical environments and identify and use appropriate technical literature.  

  4. Conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and analyze and interpret results to improve processes.  

  5. Function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams. 

Program Electives (BS.MEC)


If selecting a concentration in either Manufacturing or Renewable Energy, students are not required to complete these electives.

Select 9 courses or 27 credits from the following:

  • Select 15 credits in MEC at 3000 or above.
  • Select 12 credits in MEC, ARE, CIS, CET, ELM, ELT, CHE, BIO, PHY, ENV, MAT - 6 credits at 3000 or above

Credits Required for Major: 98-104


Graduation Requirements


To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other Degree Requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
