Coaching Minor (PED)

The Coaching Minor at Vermont State University is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in coaching at various levels, from youth sports to collegiate athletics. This minor focuses on providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to become effective coaches, both on and off the field.  Students will focus on coaching specific sports but also gain knowledge in officiating, first aid/CPR, injury recognition, care and prevention, nutrition, psychology and strength and conditioning.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the ability to design and implement effective practice plans, develop training routines, and utilize strategies for coaching various sports.
  2. Exhibit strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills to provide constructive feedback, motivate athletes, and foster a positive, team-oriented environment.
  3. Recognize the psychological principles that impact athletic performance, such as motivation, stress management, mental toughness, and team dynamics, and apply these concepts to support athlete development.
  4. Identify and apply injury prevention strategies, understand proper conditioning techniques, and maintain awareness of nutrition and recovery needs for athletes.
