Atmospheric Sciences (BS)


Program Description 

Vermont State University’s Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences program has a long history of excellence, with many successful alumni working throughout the country in various sectors. The program’s diverse and rigorous curriculum prepares students who are passionate about weather, climate, and the environment for professional careers. The program offers a modern curriculum that combines hands-on learning with preparation in math and the physical sciences. This includes five career concentrations: National Weather Service, Broadcasting, Private Industry, Climate Change, and Graduate School. These concentrations provide students with opportunities to take specialized courses that develop knowledge and skills tailored to their own career interests. 

Program Outcomes 

  1. Apply fundamental mathematical and physical concepts to the analysis and understanding of atmospheric science related events. 

  1. Correctly analyze atmospheric science data and develop a scientifically based weather forecast. 

  1. Use technology to manage, display, and analyze digitized geophysical data. 

  1. Effectively present atmospheric science concepts to knowledgeable audiences. 

Program Core (62 credits)


Requirements include Mathematics and Science courses, the Atmospheric Science program required courses, and at least one of the career concentrations. Note: in order to complete the program in three years, students must be placed into MAT 2532 (Calculus II) and PHY 2061 (Physics I) during the fall semester of the student’s first year. All students in the BS in Atmospheric Sciences program must receive a grade of C- or higher in all program required courses and prerequisites to count toward the programmatic degree.

Graduation Requirements


To obtain a degree, students must fulfill the major-specific requirements as well as satisfy all other Degree Requirements  including the Connections General Education Program Requirements .
