MAT 1240 - Statistics for Hospitality Industry GE 3 cr Graded Only
This statistics course provides the student of hospitality, tourism, and events with all that they need to undertake statistical analysis using SPSS in their industry. It is designed to engage students in statistical thinking that explore data entry, importing and exporting data sets, performing descriptive statistics for all type of variables, performing simulations, and performing all fundamentals of statistical inference; t-Test, ANOVA, Correlation Analysis, fitting Regression Analysis, Time Series* and Forecasting*, Chi-Square Test for Categorical data, and factor Analysis*. The step-by-step pedagogy on how to carry out each of the above statistical concepts are accompanied with applications and examples directly from the hospitality, tourism, and events sector using a combination of screenshots, diagrams, and tables aids the understanding. Each statistical topic opens with a sector-specific case study reflecting current trends and issues from a range of different countries that are affecting the industry today. It is followed by a workshop of the SPSS procedures relating to the case study. The implementation of clear, step-by-step demonstrations on how to carry out statistical analysis. Each chapter closes with thorough guidance on how to appropriately write up interpretations of the statistical results. The aim of the course will be the development of the student’s ability to collect data, store data, understand, interpret, and make decisions from statistical information in the hospitality and resort industry.
