This course offers a history of 19th and 20th century China with a focus on political and cultural revolutions that helped shape the modern Chinese state. Topics discussed in the course include late Qing Dynasty political dynamics, China’s international relations with foreign empires, the development of democratic and Marxist political ideologies in China, the impact of modern wars on China’s citizens, and the rise of the Chinese Communist Party.
