This course is a survey of Eurasian history from the Byzantine Empire through Kievan Rus and Muscovite Russia to the present. Topics include leadership and succession; the role of the Orthodox Church and Islam; relationships with neighbors; colonization; the role of the state in the Russian and Ottoman Empire; and revolutionary movements. Novels, art, and films will complement historical analysis.
