This course introduces students to the complex set of societies, governments, and systems encompassed by British overseas expansion, predominately from the 18th century to the present. Topics covered include Britain’s trading empire, the role of warfare in British expansion, the roles of gender and culture in shaping imperial policies, and the legacies of the British Empire in the world today.
