Policy Rationale
Vermont State University (VTSU) recognizes the need to reduce the negative effect of a poor grade or grades upon a student’s successful completion of their degree. Students may encounter difficulties that affect their ability to complete or pass a class, and this policy allows them to repeat an unsuccessfully attempted class for an improved grade and substitute the new grade for the initial grade.
Policy
Per the Vermont State Colleges System (VSCS) Policy 111: Academic Data Management, students may repeat a course* once without advisor’s permission, for an improved grade. Credit for the course may be earned only once. If the credit value of the course has changed, the repeated course is worth the new credit value.
When a student repeats a course within the VSCS, the initial grade remains on the transcript, but any quality point values and credits awarded are removed from the student’s cumulative GPA calculation. The most recent grade, and its quality point values and associated credits, will be computed in the student’s semester and cumulative GPAs.
When a student has received transfer credit pre-approval to repeat a course at another institution outside of the VSCS, the initial grade remains on the transcript and is still calculated in the student’s semester and cumulative GPAs. The repeated course being transferred to VTSU will display as transfer credit and may fulfill degree requirements , but the grade will not be calculated in the student’s semester or cumulative GPAs.
Students may request to use the Pass (P) /No Pass (NP) option (for Pass/No Pass-eligible courses) when registering for a repeated course, however programs may require letter grades to fulfill requirements. Grades of P/NP will have no impact on the student’s GPA.
Some programs may have more stringent course repeat policies.
*Some courses may be taken multiple times for credit, as indicated in the Course Descriptions section of the catalog.
