Program Description
Climate change presents humankind with a monumental challenge. Global temperatures are climbing, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate, and sea levels are rising. The impacts of climate change are expected to escalate and there is a critical need for trained professionals to confront these challenges.
Vermont State University’s Bachelor of Science in Climate Change Science program is designed to empower students with the training and skills necessary to make a difference. Students learn about climate impacts in a variety of general science courses and study the theory in meteorology and climatology courses. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to learn about natural and human-caused climate changes through various scientific lenses. Students examine the causes of climate change and develop an understanding of the current state of the science and its applications.
Throughout their course of study, students use technology to work with large climate datasets, and establish and improve effective communication skills to help bridge the gap between scientists and non-scientists. Students then tailor the program to their interests by selecting from interdisciplinary electives.
Program Outcomes

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of natural and human-caused climate changes, both historical and projected, through a scientific framework (i.e., observational, theoretical, or modeling perspectives).

Apply fundamental scientific knowledge, with an emphasis on climate change, to areas such as mitigation, adaptation, risk assessment, economics, policy, environmental science, or other discipline.

Effectively use technology to collect, manage, display, and analyze data.

Effectively present climate change concepts at a level appropriate to the audience.
